7 is MS's best OS ever interface wise, the only reason to upgrade to 10 is the performance improvements.
I don't have numbers to support my position, but I have read that windows 8 had significant performance improvements over windows 7 and 10 has only furthered these improvements.
Not sure about the performance improvements for my shop laptop anyway... seemed like 10 was sluggish. Went back to 7 and it was fast again. (intel i5/4mb)
The true speed demon was Windows 8.1. Ten seems a tad slower than that, though it's still faster than 7 overall. Your mileage may vary, according to the startup items you have, as well as any driver difficulties. So far the thing that makes me really angry, is the lack of information on just what is being updated with each new update. My nephew, who's ISP has data caps, has run into the overage wall with these repeated cumulative updates as well. It doesn't help that Windows Update now has this stupid bit-torrent-derived P2P update delivery model, which is on by default, and doesn't ever ask you about your data caps for non-wireless internet connections.
The wifi adapter for the comp I toyed with which I toyed with Win-10, the Asus PCE N-53, is supposed to work with 10 out of the box according to Asus, but there's no way to enable the 5ghz band that I could tell, so I went back to XP on that comp. (Also toyed with Ubuntu-mate but it looked like the typical Ubuntu pita shit)
What works, works, plus I have a nice image with all the knick-knacks installed. But yeah, it's time for a new OS. Maybe Win 7.
BTW, this is the HTPC, not my main computer, which does have Win 7. I'd been waiting for Win 10 to upgrade the OS but apparently that was a waste of time in this case.
I upgraded to Win10 the day it came out on my work laptop. I haven't had any problems with it, although I have disabled pretty much all of the features on it like Cortana, Edge, etc. Trying to keep the privacy to a maximum. As far as performance, it boots just a little quicker than 8.1, other than that I don't really notice any difference at all. I have installed it on three other laptops that I was setting up for employees here, but each time it would never connect to wireless, and it wouldn't show a damn thing in the event logs either. It'd prompt you for the password when you chose the network you wanted, you enter the password, and then it just says "Unable to connect" immediately. Tried several different wireless drivers, and nada. These are brand new machines too. HP ProBook 440 G2s; being that the event logs showed nothing and swapping drivers didn't take care of it, I ended up just reverting back to 8.1 because I couldn't spend all day trying to get wireless to work on these two machines. Anybody else having this issue?
If you have 7, the only reason to upgrade would be the free upgrade time limit. Honestly, if you like 7, then keep 7. Just get a new machine (like a Surface Book) with Winten pre-installed for the Winten experience. That said, I hear the Insider Ring is rolling out a latest version of Winten that can be installed actually using your old 7 and 8 product keys... Edit: From what I've heard, MS is starting to get really aggressive in their efforts to move the entire windows universe to V. 10, with Windows Update not only downloading, but also ENABLING BY DEFAULT the Winten update on some 7 and 8 systems. So if you're not paying attention, you may wake up one morning to find you have Winten whether you wanted it or not...
Ugh. Fall Update was more of a hassle than the original upgrade from 8.1 to 10. Reinstall of apps that disappeared or stopped working after the update, and going through and flipping ALL the switches in every category of Settings. Even if the switch is in the position I desire, I still have to toggle it and toggle it back, to get the setting straight. I did not have color title bars till I did this, and SOMETHING was using my disabled location information while I was idle, till I did this, as well. After all the headbanging, everything is working hunky dory now, but it sure was annoying. I'd say the bootup speed is back to the speed of 8.1, though the restart speed has gotten significantly worse, to the point where it might be faster to just turn off and turn back on.
Oh, one interesting new feature of the fall update, which the previous win10 (and 8.x) lacked, was JUMP LISTS for the live tiles! I was missing that quite a bit. It was annoying to only have jumplists for my taskbar items.
BTW, I bought an E8400, 4 gb RAM, 1 tb HDD with Win 7 pre-loaded for ~ $120-ish with the rebate. I upgraded to Win 10. So far I like it, though I don't do much with it . . . Flightsim charts, Folding at Home, yada. The Opty 175 was simply wearing out. Oh, to get Windows 10 to recognize the 5ghz band on my wifi adapter, I had to switch it from Station to Access Point and then back again.
I swear these new "universal" style apps are more buggy than old-style. A bunch of them went bonkers around the time of "the Great Leaking", including Windows Store itself. I had to reset windows 10, and during the confusion of setting things back up, I lost the program files(x86) folder of the "windows.old" folder, so I've permanently lost Doom final and ultimate, quake (I), and Command & Conquer Tiberium Wars. Sigh. Well, I found a zipped up backup of my old quake folder from my winxp days, on a dusty cd-r. So I've been hitting all the spots to find all the goodies to add to my darkplaces installation, like purty water and all new textures. So I got that much back at least.
MS is sure relying on the nag screens to push the win10 OS. There's a reason it's free. Nagging has just the opposite intended effect on me.
