I'm looking at spending some cash on a new laptop to replace my old IdeaPad Y580. Looking at an Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop. I'm thinking the Core i5 might be plenty fast, but I might end up taking out the 256GB that's in there and put in my 480GB SSD drive, OR get an enclosure for my drive and hook it up externally for other purposes. Just not sure how well games would run off of an external drive like that. OR...just get the Core i7 one with 128GB msata+1TB and 16GB Ram. My Ideapad is a 5 year-old Core i7, with 16GB, and a 2GB 660M GTX. Thoughts? Primarily work, with some gaming here and there. Gave my "gaming rig" to my son for Christmas, and I miss playing games.

My problem with a desktop is I have nowhere to put it. My last rig I ended up giving to my son for Christmas because before, it sat in my home entertainment unit, barely getting used, other than maybe as a file server (and it had some chops to it). With the laptop, I use one everyday, and can place it on the kitchen table, play it in the bed, on my couch, etc. My company is forking over 700 to help pay for it, I'm sure I can get 200 for my old one (going to rip out the SSD and put back the old spinning drive) and then the SSD....may keep it as a portable backup for my new laptop or sell it separately...havent decided yet. In the end, my new laptop ends up costing the same or less as when I bought my old laptop 5 or 6 years ago when it was new.
I meant if you know how to build a desktop you have the capabilities to build a laptop. I used that site for my barebones chassis and a combination of Newegg and amazon for the other parts. I built my laptop in 2015 and it's still running strong, even after moving halfway around the world.
