It's funny that today, it's Father's Day AND National Aboriginal Day in Canada. The joke has a further solid foundation. :D

Happy Father's Day to all the other fathers out there. Hope your day is turning out better than mine.

Took my dad out to dinner last night with the brother and sister, today taking him up a big tree (130 feet?) at the garden where he works.

Instead of buying my dad a card this year I decided to put the $5 towards something practical and bought him 2 lbs. of Hormel Black Label bacon. He was very happy to wake up to a full breakfast of bacon and eggs plus a huge plate of bacon for himself.

i'm with you on this one...wtf bigwill?

i just got back from taking my dad to NYC for the day with the rest of the family. we took him on one of those double decker site seeing buses. he's wanted to do it forever (the rest of us were less than thrilled since my siblings both have lived in NYC for over 10 years). it actually wasn't too bad though. got to see NYC from a different perspective at least.

Yes yes yes, more tree climbing pictures from me :p

So I told my dad I'd take him climbing (of course he is the one who got me into rock and mountain climbing) and he wanted to do this tree at the garden where he is the Senior Gardener and has worked for 20 years.

So that is the tree, measured (by my ropes) at 145 feet tall. While we were up there, someone on the ground was like "What are you doing?" To which my dad replied "I'm the senior gardener here, we are just checking the health of the tree" Hahaha... right, we were working :p

    The base of the tree.

    The way up.

At the top (well, as close as we could get) at 130 feet. He really liked getting up there, really got a kick out of it. "I've worked here 20 years, and I've never gotten a perspective on the garden like this one." So naturally while we are up there he keeps talking about his plans for what to work on, what to change, etc.

Then it started to rain. HARD. Like, thunder, lightening, hail, just dumping like I haven't seen in a long time. Lightening + tallest tree in the area = get down fast!

To give an idea of the rain, back on the ground. Paths instantly turned to rivers, and we were soaked in just a few minutes.

This is a blocked drain in the parking lot. Keep in mind this is maybe 5 minutes of rain. Cleared the drain off and it made a fun little whirlpool that sucked all the water down in 3 or 4 minutes.

Then we walked around the garden some more, and went to a taco truck for lunch. I just burned him a CD of the pictures I took and printed out a picture of us at the top of the tree for him to put in his office.

Good fathers day gift I think. Hell, it's probably the only time I've ever actually done something for fathers day :p
